6 Money-Saving Tips for Moving Day

6 Money-Saving Tips for Moving Day

If you are getting ready to move, you must read what follows. Here are some ideas that just might help you keep a few dollars in you pocket!

1— Don’t Buy Boxes, Ever

Some people become embarrassed at the idea of asking for cardboard boxes from nearby businesses and stores; and yet, they are usually more than happy to get rid of them. Businesses receive several deliveries on a weekly, and even daily, basis. You’re doing them a favour by taking all that cardboard off their hands!

2— Don’t Move During the Busiest Time of the Year

The cost of renting a moving truck usually skyrockets around July 1, the date when many Quebeckers choose to vacate their current residence and relocate. If it is possible for you to move house at the start of June or at the end of July instead, you will be able to get a better rental rate.

3— Call and Compare Several Moving Companies

The total cost of services varies wildly from one moving company to another! It is therefore imperative that you call a few different ones to compare their prices and get the best rate. You can also ask the representative for the least expensive vehicle in their fleet (there is no point in renting the fastest or largest truck if you don’t need all those cubic metres).

4 — Before the Moving Day, Sell What You Don’t Want or Need

Packing for a move is the perfect time to get rid of the stuff that is gathering dust at home. By organizing a yard sale (if bylaws permit!) or by posting an ad online, you may be able to obtain a good price for your used furniture, sports equipment, or other items in good condition.

5 — Don’t Be Shy About Enlisting Family and Friends

This practice is common among young people, but all age groups should embrace it! Relying on family and friends is a real boost for your budget. Plus, you may know someone who owns a truck or trailer, which will save you the cost of renting a vehicle.

6 — Feed the Gang Without Busting Your Budget

Our final tip: save on food (and beer, if possible!). After such a strenuous day, you will need to feed the strong (and small) arms that lent a hand. Ordering pizza is often the go to option (not only is it affordable, it saves us from rummaging through boxes for dishes and utensils), but there are other types of meals that can be just as budget-friendly. In any case, keep a lookout for restaurants offering special deals or coupons before the big day! You may also want to prepare a large lunch to provide more nutritious (and cost-effective!) fuel to those who will be kind enough to help you out.

Happy moving day! We hope you love your new home!
