Lawnless Landscaping Ideas for Your Home

Lawnless Landscaping Ideas for Your Home

While a green lawn is ubiquitous with living in the suburbs, many people find maintaining it to be a chore. Drought or pests can quickly make it look drab, bringing down your house’s curb appeal.

The solution: replace it! Just because your neighbours have grass covering their entire yard, doesn’t mean you have to keep up with the Jones. However, even without a lawn, your yard must be in harmony with that of the surrounding homes. Here are some hassle-free and contemporary landscaping ideas if you want a lawnless alternative.

Real-Looking Artificial Grass

Artificial turf can be a sensible option! Some models are so lifelike that you won’t believe it wasn’t made by Mother Nature. The trick is to look for products that contain built-in flaws—such as yellowed blades—which accentuate their realism. This type is more expensive than perfect, uniform and vividly green strips of “grass,” but is noticeably more attractive in a backyard setting. This idea is particularly popular for front yards as it blends in better with a traditional neighbourhood’s overall aesthetic.

Decorative Stones

Landscaping featuring decorative rocks is very chic. Garden supply stores sell a variety of stones for all types of decor. For example, coal-coloured cobbles are perfect for a contemporary courtyard while smooth pebbles in assorted shades of cream and beige are beautiful in a rustic design. Decorative rocks will look great whether you spread them over a small or large surface area.

A Wildflower Meadow

Imagine gazing over multicoloured swathes of tiny flowers in your backyard. What a wonderful view! You can also sew wildflowers by a winding path or along the bottom of your hedge. Very pretty! And these plants require only minimal care.

Mulch

Mulch is used primarily to cover bare soil in a garden or vegetable plot to prevent weeds by cutting off their air and light supply. But this mixture—of wood chips, bark, straw and dead leaves—can also be spread over larger areas. This ground cover is long lasting and requires no maintenance. If the mulched ground is frequently trampled on, you will have to fluff up the top layer every now and then to keep it looking great.

Paving Stone

It is easy to beautify your backyard thanks to the wide range of paving stone models available on the market. Remove all or only parts of the lawn and recover those sections with a floor of interlocked stones. Use this new space as a patio or eating area, although you don’t necessarily need to have a purpose in mind. A stone-paved surface looks great on its own, even without furniture.

Concrete

Along the same lines as paving stone is pouring concrete slabs in different zones in the yard. You can also tint your concrete when preparing it for a more contemporary look. This is extremely trendy at the moment.

Tiles

The same goes for ceramic tiles, a flooring option that has been popular for a few years now and that is perfect for the yard. Choose a model that is made for both indoor and outdoor use and thus extend your habitable living area for grander feeling rooms guaranteed!

Creeping Thyme

If you want to say goodbye to your grass, but still want a soft green surface to walk on, plant a species of creeping thyme. You will get a nice thick carpet of leaves. And when the thyme is in flower, your yard will a bright shade of pink. Magnificent!

Wood

Many homeowners choose to cover a large part of their backyard with wood planks, in the manner of a deck, but at ground level. This natural material adds a lot of warmth to the landscaping. It can likewise be used to create zones dedicated to specific summer activities to make the most of the season.

We hope you no longer believe that a beautiful backyard is synonymous with having a lawn! If you are tired of maintaining all that grass, by all means remove it entirely or reduce its size and know that doing so will in no way diminish your landscaping’s appeal. Think it over!
